CD-MAX Inc. Inaugurates Patented Electronic Information Metering System Mitchell International First To Offer Flexible, Usage-Based Billing Option For CD-ROM Subscribers Murray Hill, N.J. --June 27, 1995-- CD-MAXTM, Inc., a leading provider of copyright protection and billing services for publishers of electronic media-based business, professional and reference information has announced that Mitchell International, a unit of The Thomson Corporation, will use CD-MAX's technology in the latest version of its Mitchell On-Demand Repair Information System. A leader in automotive repair information services for over 75 years, Mitchell offers a CD-ROM-based information system that combines on-line technical support with the largest industry database in its field, equivalent in content to 200 maintenance manuals, totaling over a million pages and more than 175,000 illustrations. Over 10,000 service stations and dealerships use the information system to maintain and repair domestic and foreign cars, vans and light trucks manufactured from 1983 to the present. CD-MAX's technology will be used by Mitchell to register customers, process credit card transactions, track and report information usage and ensure data security. As demonstrated by Metered-On-Demand, a major CD-MAX benefit for electronic publishers and their customers is flexible, usage-based pricing. CD-MAX eliminates the need to offer large databases at fixed prices which are often too costly for many potential customers and considerably lower than what many high volume users would be willing to pay. CD-MAX works by combining content with encryption and usage-tracking programs before the CD-ROM discs are mastered and pressed. Each customer receives a setup program that installs security codes needed to unlock information automatically. Approximately once a month, a usage report is sent toll-via modem from the customer's workstation to CD-MAX's billing computer. (Customers without modems can mail in a diskette.) Customers may pre-pay for information by authorizing a charge to their credit card, or be billed later if the publisher is willing to extend credit. Robert A. Wiedemer, president of CD-MAX, Inc., announced the company's relationship with Mitchell International at the 1995 Information Industry Investor Conference, an annual event sponsered by the Information Industry Assocation (IIA). Both CD-MAX and Mitchell are IIA members. CD-MAX, Inc. is a subsidiary of InfoServe, Inc, (OTC symbol ISRV).
