AppliedTheory Communications, Inc. and NetSat Express, Inc., Announce Plans to Offer High Speed, Satellite Internet Access and Web Services Worldwide Global Villagers Will Surf the Net Three Times Faster Than Possible With ISDN New York, NY --December 11, 1996--In a joint announcement at Internet World, AppliedTheory Communications, (formerly NYSERNet, the first non-government Internet service provider in the U.S.), and NetSat Express, a strategic alliance between Worldcomm Systems Inc., (WSI) and Hughes Network Systems, have agreed to provide 400Kbps satellite Internet access and comprehensive Web services to countries in Eastern Europe, South and Central America, Asia/Pacific Rim and Africa. "Even in countries with excellent telephone infrastructure, a satellite-based system offers unparalleled advantages," said Dr. Richard Mandelbaum, AppliedTheory's president and one of the architects of the present-day Internet. "By using NetSat Express' wireless technology and AppliedTheory's U.S.-based T3 network, virtually anyone in the world can jet-ski the Internet at three times the speed of ISDN and 10 to 15 times faster than dial-up-line modems now provide. This is especially crucial for 80 percent of the world's population which, because of inadequate or non-existent telephone service, is without high speed Internet access." NetSat Express president Gerald A. Gutman stated that "NetSat Express offers Internet access via the world's most advanced satellite networking and VSAT technology. With the addition of AppliedTheory's Internet connectivity and expertise we can now link our customers to one of the most reliable Internet backbones in the U.S. The result we envision is a superior global satellite and terrestrial network supported by all the requisite Internet services, such as Web hosting and custom training, that AppliedTheory provides." Mandelbaum explained that NetSat Express' resources will allow AppliedTheory to better deliver Web management and Internet services. "In cooperation with regional partners, we anticipate building high performance facilities around the world for network management and engineering that will eventually become regional Internet Service Providers (ISPs). Local telephone companies, universities, ISP start-ups, government agencies and international relief organizations would be prime prospects for this service. Our plan will permit interested groups in any country to offer Internet access and support." NetSat chose AppliedTheory, Gutman said, because of the company's ability to set up a Point of Presence (POP), provide full connectivity and train foreign regional providers. The Long Island, New York section of AppliedTheory's T3 backbone will be extended to include NetSat's Hauppauge facility. NetSat in turn will provide the Internet satellite uplink facilities. The service will be distributed to thousands and potentially millions of users. Applied Theory Communications is a pioneering Internet Service Provider with over eleven years of experience.
